Making A Bird Feeder Is A Creative Way To Help Mother Nature
There are so many ways to make bird feeders and many of them include using recycled or repurposed items which I love. Giving something another life purpose as well as helping out the birds is a double bonus for me.
I am always on the lookout for fun craft projects that I can do with my little grandson when he is older and teaching him how to make a bird feeder will be so rewarding!
I've gathered several different projects and ways to make a bird feeder and am sharing them with you here so that you can enjoy them yourself or have fun with your little ones.

Recycled Milk Carton Bird Feeder - How To Make A Bird Feeder Tutorial
This adorable bird feeder tutorial would be very easy for kids of all ages to make. A little paint, some popsicle sticks, some imagination and there you have it!
I'm definitely saving the instructions for this one as I know it would be very easy to trace some coloring book characters onto an empty milk or juice carton and then to paint them in.

Very Easy Pretzel Bird Feeder - Make an Edible Bird Feeder
This edible bird feeder project would be ideal for little ones to have fun with. Probably a good idea to have some extra munchies for the crafters as well as the birds while making this one!
The recipe in this link only mentions one type of seed but I think you could cover this bird feeder with pretty much any type of bird feed or food that birds love. Consider using a mixture of sunflower seeds, oats, millet, sesame seeds or chopped peanuts. Varying the size of the feed will attract different types of birds to your feeder.

Chicken Egg Shells Help Wild Birds - Who Knew?
As I was researching and looking for different wild bird feed recipes, I came across an interesting way to attract many birds is by laying out chicken egg shells for them to eat.
When reading why, it makes sense. It seems that the female birds are in high need to replenish their calcium supplies after laying their eggs and when you put out chicken egg shells, they pounce on them!

Apparently you aren't supposed to just toss them out for feeding time. There are a few simple steps that you need to take.

I came across this wild bird feed recipe below on Mother Earth News.
There are 4 recipes at the above link for wild bird feed and you can print them as well. These recipes were derived from "Bird Food Recipes", by Rhonda Massingham Hart. It's a short and interesting article that talks about just how much your wild bird friends need to eat every day to help carry them through the winter.
There is also a nice article at GreenSideUpVeg that shares how they made their Coconut Shell Bird Feeders. Their article addresses how they dealt with the coconut in the shells.

Ingredients
- 3 parts Suet or Lard
- 1 part Cornmeal
- 1 part Peanut Butter
- 1 part Brown Sugar
- 1 part Raisins or Dried Cherries or Dried Cranberries
- 1 part Mixed Seed or broken Nuts
- A sprinkling of Sand
- 1 or more Coconuts split in half
Instructions
- **Before Beginning**
- -Split the coconuts in half and attach string or wire to the shells for hanging.
- -You will probably want to use a drill to make holes in the coconut shells to attach the wire or string to.
- -The recipe does not say whether to use Green Coconuts or Brown Coconuts and whether to clean the coconut meat out first. The link above talks about how they made theirs to get ideas.
- **Making The Bird Feed Mixture**
- -Melt suet then allow to cool.
- -Re-melt and stir in all other ingredients.
- -Stir until mixture thickens.
- -Thin with a small amount of water or milk if needed.
- -Thicken with a small amount of flour if too thin.
- -Divide mixture between the coconut halves.
- -Hang the coconut feeders where you can observe the wild birds feeding and Enjoy!

I love when we can use recycled materials in our craft projects! Not sure why that gives me such a good feeling but it truly does.
This very easy and cute bird feeder is crafted from a toilet paper holder and I think it looks much better in it's repurposed life. I'm thinking that paper towel rolls could be cut in half and used as well.
